Fat. It’s a dirty word, apparently. A word that is almost stage whispered when people say it. The F Word aims to challenge the impossible beauty ideals that are pressed onto women. We are consistently told by fashion and the media that we are not good enough and this has a profound negative effect on self esteem. If we are fat, we have failed. The artist challenges these narrow body ideals by creating a couture outfit from images of her untamed flesh. By turning herself into a garment she could talk about body image on several levels: the taming of flesh, the absurdity of 'correct flesh', and our relationship with food.

Vanessa Fairfax-Woods is a conceptual artist who works with the issues of gender inequality & feminism. Perceived empowerment Vs actual empowerment are common themes in her work. Her work is performative, playful and subversive, choosing to approach serious issues with a humour that allows a conversation to open up, rather than shut it down.
