There are infinite ways to communicate one's identity. As a Nartaki (dancer), the clothing that one adorns on their body communicates where they're from, how they're about to move and what they're moving for. Dressing up as a Nartaki blesses the dance with a distinct identity, in turn giving the dancer their own identity. In Bharatanatyam (Classical Indian Dance), that is precisely what a dancer thinks of while adorning themselves with their clothes, jewelry and make-up in preparation to dance. Bringing this process onto the streets of New York gives this ancient tradition the platform to be demystified and therefore better understood.

Sayali Bramhe is a Dancer and Actor from Bangalore, India, and is a NYU Tisch Alumna. She trained in Bharatanatyam in India before leaving her home country to pursue acting at NYU's Experimental Theatre Wing. During her time there, she developed her own devised theatre piece, Natarani.
